Some say bitcoin&#8217;s volatility casts doubt on it as a store of value, while its energy-intensive mining process has raised <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/energy-consumption-of-nft-cryptocurrency-mining-and-sustainable-alternatives-2021-7?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:environmental concerns\" class=\"link \">environmental concerns<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The risk of scams is top of mind for regulators \u2014 one called cryptocurrencies just &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/currencies\/cryptocurrencies-95-fraud-hype-noise-confusion-neelcoin-fed-neel-kashkari-2021-8?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:fraud, hype, and noise\" class=\"link \">fraud, hype, and noise<\/a>&#8221; \u2014 while others describe them as a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/83a14261-598d-4601-87fc-5dde528b33d0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ponzi scheme\" class=\"link \">Ponzi scheme<\/a> meant to trap investors. A <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/currencies\/crypto-regulation-sec-cryptocurrency-exchanges-gary-gensler-trading-investor-protection-2022-1?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:fuzzy regulatory landscape\" class=\"link \">fuzzy regulatory landscape<\/a> hasn&#8217;t helped.<\/p>\n<p>Warren Buffett&#8217;s deputy, Charlie Munger, just this week trashed cryptocurrencies by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/charlie-munger-daily-journal-stocks-crypto-fed-market-crash-quotes-2022-2?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:comparing them to sexually transmitted diseases\" class=\"link \">comparing them to sexually transmitted diseases<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The second barrier to bitcoin&#8217;s success, according to Dorsey, is the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/currencies\/metaverse-crypto-blockchain-battle-facebook-meta-big-tech-axie-sandbox-2021-12?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:push by venture capitalists and corporations\" class=\"link \">push by venture capitalists and corporations<\/a> into the crypto sphere.<\/p>\n<p>Many in the community see crypto as a way to shake off Big Tech and Wall Street&#8217;s role as gatekeepers in the internet and traditional finance. A core tenet of its blockchain-based systems is that they depend on linked-up individuals rather than a central middleman.<\/p>\n<p><button class=\"link caas-button collapse-button\" aria-label=\"\" title=\"\" data-ylk=\"elm:readmore;slk:Story continues\">Story continues<\/button><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If a company or a particular VC owns the majority of this new space, we&#8217;ve completely failed.
